Inspiration!

That is what I am feeling today as I bear witness to the inauguration of OUR 44th President of the United States of America. What I am most impressed by is his call to action from ALL of us.

President Obama is not a messiah, nor do I believe that he is trying to be. No one can make massive changes alone. However, one person can start a movement of change. It takes just one light of a candle to light another and then another and before you know it, the darkness will be lifted. President Obama is just one candle. It is up to us to work together to heal our nation and choose to take and pass that light on to others. Regardless of your political allegiance, it is up to us [working together] to make this a better nation. So go forth and make a change and pass the light.

issaquah-gnomeRecently I ran across an interesting editorial piece - 72 hours in the Issaquah Highlands - about Issaquah Highlands. It talks about real estate, retail, entertainment, dining, overall community as well as the lifestyle. At first I thought it was somewhat amusing, but I am continually drawn back to it and each time I read it makes me fume (just a little).

Maybe it was all in good fun. Maybe there is a bit of truth to it. Maybe I have a grey hair or two. But does that give someone the right to point it out and rub it in? I can take a joke just as well as the next person, but I take a lot of pride in the community that I live in as well as the people that help define it. As a resident, I feel it is my privilege and obligation to share all the wonderful things about this great little place I call home.

Just to indulge the author, some of the more amusing quotes from the article include:

Unless accustomed to the intensely exciting pace of Highlands life, you should take a mild tranquilizer (Xanax or Valium) three times a day during your visit.

and

Amateurs often have difficulty identifying which of the 47 shades of grey have been used on the exterior of each home.

and

With hundreds of TV channels available via cable or satellite, Highlanders can choose among an almost infinite variety of nighttime entertainment.

So what’s the point you ask? Well as a resident of Issaquah Highlands, I know for a fact that several of the characterizations in the article are far from true; especially the ones about the sights and people. I’ll give the author credit for the retail comments and maybe even the ones about dining.

I propose a challenge/contest to the residents of Issaquah Highlands. For those that are up to it, I would like to see a “Visitors Guide To Issaquah Highlands” written by a resident. The guide should be written in similar fashion, travel guide style, and should cover the following categories.

  • Events
  • Dining/Nightlife
  • Shopping
  • Art and Music
  • Activities
  • Lifestyle

The guide should be informative and witty. The winner of the contest will be published on this site with full credit and receive 2 FREE MOVIE TICKETS to either Regal or Loews or a $15 Gift Certificate to Cafe Ladro. The deadline for submissions will be January 15th. Please email me all submissions or if you have any questions.

day-light-savings This coming Sunday, November 4th, marks the end of the Daylight Savings Time window for 2007.

Don’t forget to set your clocks back an hour.

Many of you probably remember that back in 2005, legislation was passed to add 4 weeks to Daylight Savings. This year was the first year it was implemented, beginning by “springing forward” 3 weeks early. The last week was/is added this fall.

cathys_trail Hats off to the volunteers that lead last Friday’s guided hike along Issaquah Highlands’ Cathy’s Trail. It was a lovely evening and lots of fun getting to know other outdoor enthusiast and community members.

When daylight permits, the group meets the 2nd Wednesday of the month at Trail Head Vista to get together and explore the wonderful trails throughout our community. Many of the same outdoor lovers can be found at the Issaquah Highlands Trail Work Parties that are held once a month on Saturday mornings.

As the summer comes to a close and cooler weather and less light bring these gatherings to a close, I am already looking forward to next spring and summer when these guided hikes resume.

Come out and join us some time.

issaquah salmon days parade

Did you know that Salmon Days is just around the corner?

October 6th and 7th represents its 38th anniversary of the festival founded back in 1970. There is a little something for everyone at Salmon Days from a community parade to wonderful arts and crafts to face painting to fantastic food. And don’t forget the whole reason for the event - watching the salmon at the salmon hatchery. My family went last year and we had a wonderful time - even my one year old had fun. This year at almost two I think she will enjoy herself even more. If you would like more information about the event, check out www.salmondays.org.

See you there!
