Having Fun at the YMCA!
Filed Under Blog, Issaquah, Issaquah Highlands | 2 Comments
So I received an interesting call this week. It was for a survey to get my opinion about a new and improved Sammamish YMCA. They are considering building a brand new, state of the art facility complete with a lap pool and many other bells and whistles. They may even be considering a “family fun pool”.
According to the survey, they are considering a number of locations; across from Skyline High School, near Pine Lake Middle School, Klahanie, Snoqualmie Ridge, and last but not least Issaquah Highlands. Yeah!
A family membership had a proposed cost of $75. If they include the lap and family fun pool - count me in. I would join just for those features - as they are sorely lacking in our wonderful community. but I would also take advantage of the various other classes they intend to offer - such as pilates, yoga, and parent/child activities as well. As far as I am concerned - the idea of a new YMCA is a great idea.

Issaquah Highlands Central Park Proposal
Filed Under Blog, Issaquah Highlands, Other Development | 2 Comments
In case you hadn’t heard, we may be getting a new soccer field in central park. The cost to us…FREE…unless you count the clear-cutting of the forested area (est. 600 large trees) above the shopping center area and the building of a maintenance road to connect it to Pad 3, west of the Central Park pond. After this access road is built, PB will be allowed to truck and dump 250,000 cubic yards of fill onto pad 3, with work continuing through the end of summer 2009. In return for this, PB will assume the cost of installing a new soccer field.
So I am all for improving the drainage at Central Park in order to make the fields more usable for all outdoor enthusiasts, but why does the City of Issaquah feel the need to clear-cut that area in order to improve drainage?
In addition, there is another proposal on the table that would eliminate one of the propose tennis courts from the development plan in lieu of a covered picnic area. In the 3 years I have lived in Issaquah Highlands, I have rarely seen any of the covered picnic sites throughout the neighborhood used, conversely I have often seen the tennis courts filled while others are patiently waiting their turn to play.
While most of the amendment presented to us in the public notice was great, I strongly disagree with the removal of the tennis courts and the clear-cutting of 3 acres offorest. I must say though that I am happy with the proposal to create a Grand Ridge trail-head at Central Park. While I still don’t like the idea of a gated community within Issaquah Highlands, at least this mitigates my concerns about granting equal access to the trail.
For more information on the propsal you can visit the City of Issaquah website.

There will also be two other locations a bit further away Enumclam Middle School (July 27-29) and Cedarcrest High School in Carnation/Duvall (August 10-12).

Gated Grand Ridge?
Filed Under Blog, Issaquah Highlands | 3 Comments
Rumor has it that Grand Ridge Drive will be a gated neighborhood within our community. I don?t know about you, but this is actually quite upsetting to me. I really enjoy walking throughout our entire neighborhood and enjoy all the beauty it has to offer. Grand Ridge in particular is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the Highlands with all its trees and wildflowers. Grand Ridge also offers access to a wonderful hiking/biking trail that is maintained by the state. This is where I find myself the most upset about the potential for the community to be permanently gated.
My daughter Emily is just under 2 and an avid fan of the outdoors. She loves being in and around nature, but her legs are small and can only take her so far. Having walking access ONLY to the trails in Grand Ridge does not seem like a realistic solution as it really isn’t feasible for her or any of the little ones we have running around the Issaquah Highlands. Should she be prevented from enjoying this wonderful trail simply because we can?t drive to the trail head?
What are your thoughts?
